16 TE KARERE MAORI OR MAORI MESSENGER.
and a "retail shop to the industrial works,
if the progress of ihe school should ever
justify me in doing so. At present 1 do not
recommend that any more trades should be
undertaken.
The-boys are required to go to such work
as they are told off for, though in arranging
the work their known tastes'are consulted as
far as possible. While at work, every boy
is expected to obey ihe orders of the Euro-
pean to whom he is sent; all complaints on
either side to be made to me. I am told by
• all the Europeans that the boys work very
well, and very few complaints are made.
INTOXICATING DRINKS.
IT is our firm conviction, that the general
disuse of intoxicating drinks by Christians,
would by the moral influence thus exercised
on all within their reach, have the effect of
saving from ruin a far larger number than
are likely to be rescued by reformatory
efforts after the path of sin has been trodden.
To prevent an evil is belter than to effect a
cure. The use, even the most moderate use
of ' intoxicants'. by society generally, and
Christian in particular, lends to conceal the
peril arising from drinking habits. From
the ranks of moderate drinkers fall off, from
day to day, the weak and erring men who in
due lime sink into the abyss of confirmed
and helpless drunkenness.—The Quiver.
