pp2-4 Letters to the Editor
From Ihakara Tukumaru, Manawatū
Address to Maori disagreeing with the establishment of a Maori king and supporting a Pakeha government and the Queen as protectors of Maori against any other invading country. Supports his opinions with a waiata [song].
Advises Maori to adopt the good and peaceful practices of the Pakeha for well-being and to live as one people.
Suggests that as native species such as the kūmara [sweet potato], fern root, tuatara [large lizard] and Maori rat have been superseded by introduced Pakeha species so with the introduction of Pakeha practices the Maori population will become `half-caste'.
Supports the sale of land at Manawatū so the benefits of Pakeha will come to Maori.
Ahuriri: the battle of Te Hāpuku and Te Moananui
Reprint of a letter from Te Karere Maori [Vol. 4, No. 10] sent by Te Harawira Te Tatere, Pākōwhai, to Mākarini [McLean] discussing a request for a meeting at Heretaunga between the Governor, Te Moananui and Te Hāpuku to end the fighting.
Recounts the events of the day for the writer and his conversations with various people from the time he learned of Paiaka's death.
Lists the names of those who died in the conflict and where they were from.
