A Telegram from Maketu to the Thames Advertiser
say :—"Whara, a Maori priest, yesterday morning tried to
trace his descent direct from Ged through all the Apostles,
but when he got to St. John he signally failed. The genera!
impression is that he commenced at the wrong end."
The Hawke's Bay Herald says :—That a two headed
calf, and 'a four legged fowl, both alive, and are now on
exhibition here-, at Christchurch.
The Hawke's Bay Herald says:—It is understood that
Mr. Vogel will leave London for New Zealand in time to join
the Mail steamer at Brindisi on the 14th May. That Mail
will be due at Wellington on the 9th July.

TE KIRIKIRI, (HAURAKI,) APERIRA 19 1875.
Ki te Kai-tuhi o te Wananga, tena koe:—Tenei
ka tukua atu e ahau kia taia: e koe kia te Wananga te
matenga o to tatou hoa o Mohi Mangakahia ki Wha-
ngapoua, Hauraki, i te ata o te Ratapu, i te 21 o
Maehe 1875.
Kanui te pouri o te ngakau mo te matenga o tenei
tangata, he tino tangata ia i roto i te whakatupuranga
o nga taitamariki o tenei wa.:—Otira i nui atu ano ia
i nga kaumatua e ora ana inaianei, o era nga whaka-
tupuranga i roto i tenei moana i Hauraki. He tangata
lament, which have reached his ears. Friends, it is
waste for the Wananga to come in these days, why;
because Papa is thrown into the water, whose work
was that, why, it is Rangatira's, by jealousy, grasp,
when a low person thinks there is none for him.
This is my words for those persons not to listen
to the words of those fabulous reptiles, that is how
we are distressed, you knowing people of New
Zealand, be strong in seeking a way .that we may be
saved from the Pakeha's but we will not be able to seek
because when laundered pounds sees that person
is able, then, comes another to him, and says Î will
give you five hundred pounds, so is understanding is
taken by five hundred pounds, like our friends who
are sent to the sacred place, to explain our complaints
when they reach there, there is three hundred
pounds, and they go, and murder us and when those
persons thinks of it the chains are on their legs.
Nevertheless, friend, build a Parliament for us Maori
tribes, then it will be good for a person to go to the
other Parliament, because this will give it work to do
for those who are there.
Also this which, is stated by a correspondent for
to go to School, so that you will know, friends, to
which School, there has been Schools established in
all parts of our Island, when the Gospel arrived, and
unto the present day. And has received no know-
ledge, I was at School in 1861, the lessons that was
given me, was cutting flax, wiwi, and manuka, planting
potatoes, and digging them, and did not receive any
education, only wasted our Lands for it, you says, go
to School, friends, where is ihe money to pay for
your education, the children of the School here, goes
when the School is over they go back to their parents
place, and stay, like our members, who went to the
Parliament School, and knew nothing. Although
you say, go.to School. Friends, this will be as a
School to us the .Wananga who is teaching us, we
must not think by those children who was sent to
School, we will be saved, no by them we will be
fairly distressed, it is stated in. the Scriptures, it will
be worse then the beginning. Cease here, so that
the reader will not be so long reading and be wearied,
from your friend.

To the Editor of the Wananga, greeting" you.
Here I forward unto you to be published in the
Wananga the death, of our friend Noses Mangakahia,
at Whangapoua, .Thames on Sunday morning, 21st of
March last.
The mind is greatly aggrieved by the death. of
this person, he is a very influence person, in the
growing up generation at the present time, but he
was greater than any of the old people of the Bay of
Hauraki. He is a person who was very much

thought of by the tribes of Hauraki, and different
tribes, also of this Island. He was to be a candidate
for the election of member for the Parliament for the
coming year, for the Western Maori electoral district.
The people of Tauranga have sent also their
votes for Moses to stand as a member for the Parlia-
ment, and also Ngatiporou at Harataunga (Kennedys
Bay,) Mataora, Hauraki, on their good faith, in the
said person. We have received the letter also of
John Taipua of Ngatiraukawa of Otaki, informing us
that is tribe will vote for Moses to be a member for
the Parliament at the next election of members.
I am only informing the great character of this
person in his own tribes at Hauraki, and also of this
Island, he is a great person in his own tribes at
Hauraki, he is a chief from his forefathers, he is a
offspring by the two sons of Marutuahu, Marutuahu
had five sons, that is how he was lifted up by his
tribes, and kept as a time beater of his canoe at
Hauraki in all the days, he was in this world.
And how great is the fall of the tribes of that
person at his death, it is not by his being a chief
From is forefathers, that his tribes is so greatly
Marutuahu, Maru-
tuahu first son was Tamatepo, his was Ruaakitua, his
was Rongomai, his was Puha, his was Rakau, his
was Tutapu, his was Taiaho, his was Te Maua, his
was Riria, hers, was Moses Mangakahi. Marutuahu
fourth son was Ngako his was Kahurautao, his was
Rautao, his was Hape, his was Kiwi his was Wairua,
his was Waka, his was Poau, his was Riria, hers was
Moses Mangakahia.
I may write also here the departing words of
Moses before his death, which he stated to Ngatiporou
who went to see him, these are his words, hold fast
to christianity as a father to a person. I reveal these
\\vords to you, so by the time 1 am dead you have got
these words, if the people of Harataunga, and Wha-
ngapoua be in difficulty, do not stand up, but set
down, and settle it yourselves, if you do so, you \\vill
correspond the word of Paul, which says :—Love is
above all things, be strong in the Gospel, do not
desincline that word, that I have spoken to you all,
you people of Whangapou, and Harataunga, the
good of the Church is how David stated these words.
How good, and how pleasant, it is for brethren to
dwell in unity, when this was ended, he spoken a
farewell word. Farewell all my friends on this
Island who knows me.

tira ia i o ona tupuna he uri ia no nga tama tokorua a
Marutuahu, (Tokorima hoki nga tama katoa a Maru-
tuahu (na kona ia ka tunui i runga i o ona iwi ka wa-
iho ia hei kai hautu i runga i tona waka i Hauraki, i
roto i nga ra katoa i a ia i te Ao nei.
Na, kanui te hinga nui o nga iwi o tenei tangata
mo tona matenga, ehara i to mea na te rangatira o
ona i o ona tupuna i pouri nui ai o ona iwi kia ia,
kaore, engari na tana mahara, whai whakaaro, whai
kupu, ko te take ano ia tenei o nga iwi ke atu o te
Motu nei i pirangi mai ai kia ia.
Na, e te kai tuhi o te Wananga, e hara i te mea
no matou anake tenei tangata i o ona whakatupuranga
engari no tatou tahi. Haunga raia toua ahua hoata-
nga kia tatou i runga i te ahua o nga kupu me nga
hamumutanga. Penei me te tangata iwi ke, he toa
katoa nei kia tatou katoa i te Ao. Engari he uri
ia no koutou, he uri hoki ia no matou. He mea tika
kia pouri tahi tatou mo toua tinana kua ngaro atu nei
i a tatou. Ka tuhia ki konei tona kauwhau i o ona
tupuna i nga tama tokorua a Marutuahu. Ko Maru-
tuahu, taua matamua tonu ko Tamatepo tana ko
Ranaakitua, tana ko Rongomai, tana ko Puha, tana

nga tangata o Whangapoua, me Harataunga, ko te pai

Farewell the tribe, farewell e Mio, do not be
sad for me, because the body will die has a recon,-
pense for the evil, the soul will be in faith. Three
minutes after these words he died, from the reporter
of the death, of Moses Mangakahia.
John Nahe.
Married on the 26th February last. Mita Hami
Anaru of Ngatikahungunu, Wairarapa, to Tare Kuti,
(Sally Cootes) of Ngatitoa. Otaki, this lady is a grand-
daughter of the Kannoa, one of the olden chiefs of
Ngatitoa, it was a pleasant marriage.
Died on the 19th of March last, Hapakuku te
Hira, Maeke, he was a good child of the Ngatiawa.
and Ngatiraukawa, he was shot by another boy
named Parata, they went to Parata house to eat
melons, the gun was hanging up. and loaded, and
Parata took it down, and fired, and shot is mate
Hapakuku, who died instantly on the morning of the
20th Dr. Hewton John Knocks, and F. Mayhew, A.C.,
went to Court, and was stated by the twelve (Jury.)
accidentally, and great was the distress of his friends
at his death,
