From Rāwiri Rota Te Tahiwi
Expresses the thought that Te Wananga is too late in coming for the land has already gone, Maori having taken the gifts of the Pakeha for their lands.
Suggests that Maori should have their own Parliament, and that Maori have wasted their lands for schooling. Adds that schools were established from the time of the gospel and Maori have still received no useful knowledge.

From Hoani Nahe
Reports the death of Mohi Mangakāhia at Whangapoua, Hauraki, a man well regarded by the peoples of Hauraki and who had been asked to stand as a candidate for the Western Maori seat, a matter also agreed to by the people of Tauranga and Ngāti Porou. A short whakapapa [genealogy] is given in the main text. His last words are reported as imploring the Maori people to hold fast to the words of the Gospel. Contains a waiata tangi [lament].

Mita Hane Ānaru of Ngāti Kahungunu, Wairarapa, has married Tare Kuti [Sally Cootes] of Ngāti Toa, Ōtaki.
