IT has been remarked again and again that the present
Ministry of New Zealand will keep office if they can,
at all hazards, and bear any castigation independent
members of the Parliament may inflict on them, so
long as a vote of want of confidence is not proposed to
the House. We are, and ever have been, amused at
the boyish folly and daring of the (as he was called
by an honorable member) junior member for Taranaki,
who, in the plentitude of his unbalanced mind, has again
and again ran a muck when he was speaking to
, to the so-called opposition, who object to his retaining
that position for which he is not by nature or educa-
cation fit to hold. What we in New Zealand are
thought of by those who look at our public men from
a distance is not easy to guess. One thing may be
surmised, that our kinsfolk in old England may truly say
we have lost all our English spirit and boast of freedom,
when we allow ourselves to be ridden rough shod over by
such leaders as those who now hold power in our

Government. we say we feel ashamed to see men
who, but the other day were not known, or held any
power or rule but that of a stock whip, or the helm of a
coasting cutter, (men who would not dare to appear else-
where in the presence of those who have humbled them-
selves for the public good, and have become the pleaders
of the ill-treated public, men of truth and education, who,
when they rise in the House to ask that they may have
a fair and impartial hearing for the constituents they
represent), get up with the most brazen effrontery, and
taunt their superiors. These maligned men not only from
their participating in the government of this country in
the past, but from having moved in the highest class of
society to which by birth, they are entitled, know how to
rule in equity; these men are charged with the most base
motives, and such charges are coached iu most offensive
language. We do not feel surprised when we see it an-
nounced in the public journals that £500 has been offered
by thepresent Government, as a reward for the capture of
Winiata, nor do we feel at all taken by surprise when
we see that Sir Donald M'Lean proposed tu the House
that the late election for the Maori member for the
East Const District should be returned as invalid, and
a new election should be held. We do not wish to
speak with more authority than the past and present
actions of the Gpvprnrnent would warrant us to predict
of the future. But if the present Government hold office
till the end of the present session of Parliament, it
will not be for want of acts on their part, the con-
demning of, which by the House, would cause men of
pure motives to resign the reins of that Government,
which in their hands has become a laughing-stock
for Englishmen, and a byword of contempt to the half
civilised New Zealander.

SATURDAY, JUNE 3, 1876.
HARAWIRA TE TATERE, of Waimarama, said ; In respect to
the first subject, I say that we have spoken in truth that
Her Majesty the Queen of England, (and her Ministers) is,
and shall be our Queen, even from the first down to those
days. We fully and constantly believe in Her Majesty
the Queen. Though some of the tribes of these Islands
have gone another way, though they have gone aside,
they are still on these Islands, and still under the Govern-
ment of Hex Majesty the Queen, and under the power or
all her laws. I agree to the proposal to make us, the
tribes of these, Islands one. Let us fully carry out this
proposal, so that the word which says collect from the West
and the North into one body, and wait and listen may be true.
Let the Maori members of the New Zealand Parliament
be of one thought in respect to these Islands. Do not let
them be of various opinions, that there may be some
work done for us. Let there be fourteen members in the
Assembly in future. I agree with all the subjects pro-
posed for discussion by this meeting. Let them be laid
before the Parliament, that they may bo agreed to.
WIREMU HANOA, of Waiapu, said : I propose, that oar
members to Parliament be in accordance with the proposal
made to this, meeting by Hikawera, who has said let us
have an equal number of Maori members in accordance .
with the number of Maoris, as that of the number of Eu-
ropean members sent in accordance with the European
population. In respect to the sixth subject, I do not
agree with any of that clause, and let the purchase of
land, the surveying of land, and the Native Lands Court
cease, in every district of our Islands.
PAORA TAIHAKI, of Waiapu, said : That which brought
us together here, is the desire that we should be one
people, and this was the great matter which brought ua
together. We are the true men of the Government in
these days (we fully submit to the laws of England). Let
us agree as to one thought for these Islands.
PAORA KAIWHATA, of Heretaunga, said: I will speak
in respect to that subject which says let the sale of land,
the Native Lands Court, and the survey of land cease. I
will also say mortgages and Crown grants. Friends, from
these have come, all evils on me, of which I have spoken.
Those are the things which brought all the evil oa Here-
taunga, Other tribes (not of the Heretaunga or Hawke's
Bay), may perhaps think that our lands are still remaining
ours, but no, they have gone from us long ago. Hence I
gay I am not now speaking for myself, but I am now
speaking to those who still hold lands of their own, and to
the tribes of these Island, so that these tribes and people
who have lands may know the cause of ray present pauper
condition, and take warning from me, lest this evil came
on them also. I also wish to say another word to this
meeting. Do not let us put all our trust in the Parliament
only, or in our Maori members, and believe that they can
save us, and save also to us the small portions of land we
still hold. No, but each tribe, each sub-tribe, and each
man, must act for themselves. That is, each may save
themselves by full belief in God and his laws, as the
foundation of their action, and the second act is, for us to
act as with one heart in regard to the subjects proposed
for action to this meeting. By this shall all our work be
correct, and let us consent to all these as law, that we may
be saved. I would also say if the people of these Islands
see that we can give effect to these laws, they will then
believe in our work.
RENATA KAWEPO said : I do not agree that we should
vote for fourteen members for us to the House of Represen-
tatives. I am of opinion that such was proposed by him (the
European), so that our lands might be taken. The Europeans
think we would vote Natives into Parliament, and when
such Maoris had taken their seat in the House, they would
borrow money from England, and give these Inlands as
security for the loan. Then the Europeans would rejoice
even as at the time that Tareha and Mete Kingi, when money
was borrowed on the security given on these Islands. I
would also say that we must be circumspect in the way
in which we address the European, we must not go in a
bold or presumptuous manner, that we may gain a fair
hearing for any matter we lay before the Parliament,
And I would also say, get all the tribes to consent and
give power to the various subjects we are now discussing,
that is respecting the sale of land, that it cease, as it is
not only in the power of the Parliament to give force to
our prayer, but it rests also with our becoming one as a
people, to express our feelings of wrongs inflicted on u»,

MONDAY, 5TH JUNE, 1876.
The meeting opened at 10 a.m., when the Chairman
(HENARE MATUA) said : The members of this meeting no
doubt are fully aware, and know what subjects they wish
to bring before this meeting. And if any speaker does
not agree with the views expressed on any subject by
previous speakers, let him express his views of dissent
without fear, in the presence of all those whe are here
assembled.
NIKORA ROTOHIKO said: I have spoken those words
which I had to convey to this meriting on the first day we
assembled here, but I now wish to say I fully endorse the
desire of this meeting that we should constitute Sub-Com-
mittees to each district, and that we should also have a
central Committee for the Maori people. I have a strong
feeling of condemnation to the sale of land, to the survey
oi land, and to the Native Lands Court as at present con-
stituted. And that in future we shall not send a Maori
member to Parliament.
WI PERE said: I propose, that we send a copy of the
eleventh subject at once to the Parliament, so that we may
save time, as words condemning our Maori member (Ka-
raitiana Takamoana), have been already forwarded to the
Parliament. And the Ngatiporou are taking the man to Wel-
lington they wish to be the member of Parliament, so that
they may secure the seat for him. I do not consider that we
are to blame for the late election not being as it should have
been, but the sole responsibility of the present confusion
rests on the Government officers. If this proposal meets
with the assent of this meeting, let the Chairman put it to
the meeting, so that we may vote on the subject.
HENARE MATUA (Chairman), said : I with to explain a
little matter in respect to the proposal made by Wi Pere,
before this meeting should be called on to vote for or against
the proposal he has made. The Government published in
the Government Gazette that there should be fifteen places
where votes could be recorded, and it appears that at three
of these places there was not any votes given, viz., one at
Rotorua, one at Waiapu, and one at Te Kawakawa, and it
is said because of the non-voting at these three places
Karaitiana's election was void. Hence I say we may
take the voice of this meeting, and forward it to the Par-
liament at Wellington, so that the House may see our
wish as soon as possible, that our member should not be
subject to any evil or JOBS of his seat through the non-
voting of the people at these three places.
RENATA KAWEPO said: Let the voice of this meeting be
taken on that point at once. Do not explain that which
it so clear to us all.
HENARE MATUA (Chairman), said : I will put it to this
meeting. Do the whole of the members of this meeting
agree to forward a copy of the eleventh subject to the
Parliament, which eleventh subject condemns the act of
unseating our Maori member.
The lands of all those in the meeting were held up,
and a copy of the eleventh subject was ordered to be sent
to the Parliament.
WI PERE said: I propose that the subject which is re-
specting the Maori member stand over for the present, and
for future discussion. Also the ninth subject be allowed
to stand over. I also propose that subjects second, third,
and fourth, be submitted to the consideration of the tribes
of New Zealand, and let them say yes or no to those sub-
jects, and which ever way they decide, so let it be. Let a
copy of the fifth subject be sent to Parliament, and if any
Government officer dare to offer money as an advance for
the purchase of any block of land, befor the whole of the
people shall have agreed to sell such block of land. Let
such cash be cast into the sea of sea of silence to be lost
for ever, and who shall regret such an act.

June 23.
IT is believed that a number of Native chiefs in Waikato
are about assembling together to discuss various questions
relating to grievances, in order that Sir George Grey may
be made acquainted with their wants. The visit of Sir
Donald M'Lean was the pre-runner of a proclamation
being issued, with drawing for distribution the several
money rewards offered by this and previous Governments
for the apprehension and conviction of Natives charged
with capital crimes. It is said that one of the Ministry is
implicated in the purchase of a large block of land in the
southern portion of Auckland, upon which some splendid
coal scams have been intersected. The sale and its at-
tendant circumstances will no doubt form Parliamentary
enquiry during the present meeting of the Assembly.
The Thames Natives are proud of Hone Nahe supporting
Sir George Grey.
It is generally believed that if Sir George Grey had an
interview with the Maori King, he would induce him to
give up for trial the Natives in his territory who are
charged with the murders of Todd, Packer, and others.
The Provincial authorities have accepted tenders for the
completion of a large bridge at Cambridge, Waikato.
Very little other Native news stirring here.
