Against Sir Donald McLean, as a private indivi-
dual and a personal friend, we have nothing to say.
Ho has rendered this colony many signal services—
more than enough, we hope, to counterbalance those
actions of his which from time to time we have been
compelled to comment upon in the WANANGA. The
grave closes upon all private and personal feuds—
and we do not desire to speak one bitter or unfriendly
word of the dead.
Owing to the lateness of the hour at which the
news reached us, we are compelled to hold over all
farther notice of this melancholy event until next
issue

THE SALMON. I
Many of the Native tribes in the Poverty Bay district
have not heard that some European gentlemen, who. having
a wish to put a lasting blessing within the reach of all their
fellow settlers, have released many thousands of young fish
called salmon in the riven which flow into the Ahuriri Bay :
and to show the value of such fish, and. what other countries
obtain for them, we quote the following which appeared in
one of our contemporaries :—" The salmon product of
Columbia River, Oregon, including not only the fish shipped,
bat ato those consumed by the fishermen themselves. will
this year reach the immense total 40,000.000 pounds. The
salmon are either salted and packed in barrels or canned
fresh. Ia the latter form it is in great demand all over the
world, and hundreds of thousands of cases, containing each
four dozen, cans, which latter weigh a pound and a quarter
apiece, are annually put up. Of these England alone takea
165,000 ; New Zealand, 2.400 : South America. 1,500 ; Aus-
tralia, 14,000 ; New York and the Atlantic coast. 58,000.
The value of the canned salmon of the Columbia River is
£3,000,000 annualy." We do not say that the Maori people
must thank those gentlemen for this kind act, as we know
that we have only to tell the tribes of the fact, and they are
sure to write letters of thanks to these true friends\_ of the
public ; not only so. but the Maori people will abstain from
fishing for, or ia any wav killing or destroying these fish.

RAILWAY COMPENSATION TO NATIVES.
The negotiations for payment of compensation to Na-
tive owners of land taken for the Napier and Waipu-
kurau line which were begun about eighteen months ago,
have at last been completed : and it is likely that iu the
course of a few days the valuators will start upon their
work.

I MINISTERIAL CHANGES.
I On Thursday last, Mr. Richardson resigned the office of
•Minister of Public works, and Mr. Donald Reid, of Otago,
took the vacant seat. Mr. Reid was a member of the
• Provincial party, but during the last session he waa
chiefly remarkable for the support which he did not give
• his party. However, he is quite as good a man as his
I predecessor, so that the colony loses nothing by the
change. Looking at it from a personal point of view,
• we consider that the whole affair serves Mr. Donald Reid
right.

INTESTATE NATIVES SUCCESSION BILL.
Mr. WHITAKER. in moving the committal of this Bill,
said he asked the house the other day to read the Bill a
I second time on the understanding that any discussion
upon it should take place on the motion that the Speaker
should leave the chair in order that the House might go
into Committee on the Bill. He now wished to say a few-
words in explanation of the principle of the Bill, and the
reason for its being brought forward. Considerable
difficulty had arisen in reference to lands held by the
Natives, for the reason that the orders of succession made
by the Native Land Court only applied to land which had
passed through that Court. But Natives were in posses-
sion of land under various other titles : and one object

of the Bill therefore was to make the order of succession
apply to all Native lands, whether they had passed
through the Native Land Court or not. That object was
a good one, and the Native members in the House were
very desirous that the Bill should be passed for the pur-
pose of enabling persons who ought to succeed to lands
acquire a good title to them. Another part of the Bill
extended the power of granting succession orders in re-
gard to personal estate. The power, to grant orders at
present referred only to lands that had passed the Native
Land Court, and did not apply to personal property at all.
The consequence was, that, when Natives died possessed
of considerable personal property, a good deal of diffi-
culty arose as to who should succeed to it. The Bill had
been brought forward on the present occasion in conse-
quence of a circumstance which occurred at the Thames.
Rapana, a chief of considerable importance, died some
time ago, leaving a sum of £7,000 deposited in the Bank
of New Zealand. He left a widow and two children.
The widow applied in ordinary course for letters of ad-
ministration : but the Judge of the Supreme Court in
Auckland would not grant them because she was unable
to prove that she bad been married according to the laws
regulating marriages among ourselves. The consequence
was. the money was at present locked up in the Bank of
New Zealand, and nobody was able to make use of it.
In order to get over that difficulty, the Native Land
Court was enabled by this Bill to ascertain who, accord-
ing to Maori custom, would be entitled to the money, and
the Court would make an order, and upon that order
letters of admistration would be granted. By this Bill,
Natives would be placed on the same footing: as Euro-
peans in regard to intestate estates after the order granted
by Native Land Court. He moved That Mr. Speaker
leave the chair in order that the House might go into
Committee on this Bill:
Mr SHEEHAN said he bad gone carefully through the
Bill, which he would support. Many districts had for
many years felt the want of such an Act as this. He
thought that it should be made law that every estate over
£50 or £100 should come under the provisions of this
Act.
Mr. SHARP did not intend to make any objection at all
to the Bill, but he would like to know how far it related
to half-castes. He would like to know how they were to
be affected by the Bill.
Mr. TAIAROA hoped the House would agree to this Bill.
At the beginning: of the session he had suggested to the
Government the desirability of introducing such a Rill,
as there were a great many people who hold lands under
Crown grant, and when they died those lands were the
subject of dispute amongst the descendants of the owner.
As the law at present stood, nobody knew to whom such
land belonged : but he was sure that if this Bill were
passed there would be no trouble. With regard to what
had been said by the honorable member for Nelson City.
ke could only say that he himself had noticed that there
was no provision made for half-castes. He would support
the Bill.
Mr. NAHE thought this was one of the best Bills which
had yet been introduced relating to Native property, but
at the same time he believed that the half-castes could,
as provided for in other Acts, come under the provisions
of this Bill the same as Maoris.
Motion agreed to. Bill considered in Committee, re-
ported without amendment, and read a third time.

work can true worship be continued. If there is not true !
worship how can the acts of man be true or correct ? I
say I am strong: in the work of this world. And this
world is the field where the work of man is tested.
Te Ropiha rose and said : O, children speak, speak. Be
strong to talk about religion ; about that which was the
power of those who have gone to the land of spirits, and
which they left as a gift to you. Do not let anyone say
my words are not true. I shall not take any heed of their
condemnation of my words.
Paora Te Ara rose and said : The words spoken are very
good words, and it is good that all should speak to the
one subject—that is, religion. Do not let any foolish man
say that religion is the sole property of value, of, and
belongs only to the European. True, but I, in accordance
with my thoughts, say this valuable property belongs to
us all, and if we give this valuable property to be the ex-
clusive property to others, it will be theirs alone : but if
we accept religion, it will be our property also. There is
only one day, and not another wherein the European and i
the Maori will be judged (Day of Judgment). And all
the human beings of all parts of the world will be there.
Not one will escape from that day. That is the one and
only day.
The above is the report of the meeting at Porangahau,
and the following are the names of the chiefs who made |
known the word that all the tribes of Aoteora (North
Island of New Zealand) should return to and worship the
true and only living God.

give them decent interment. At one moment we were \\
told that the cardinal curse to the colony was giving I
powers to the provinces to borrow, because they inter- !
fered with the policy of immigration and public works,
although at the very time I contend that in the Provinces i
Of Otago, Wellington, Canterbury, and Auckland immi-
gration and public works bad been better conceived and i
were being carried out better, more economically, and
with more satisfactory results than the same policy as
carried out by the colony. Because they borrowed money
for this purpose we were told that they had woven a rope
to hang themselves, that they were working for their own
destruction, and that they should be put to death. That
doctrine was hardly swallowed by the Government sup-
porters in this House before we had an exactly opposite
doctrine propounded to us. We then had that set of
Bills which were by some called the " neglected and
criminal children," by others the " little pigs," and by
others the " seven deadly sins," on account of their num-
ber, by which various provinces were allowed to borrow
in order that they might aid in carrying out the colonial
policy of immigration and public works. I remember
well that when those Bills met that fate which, I believe, |
the principal measure of this session is now meeting in
the other branch of the Legislature. I was one of those
who rejoiced. But the honorable gentleman who intro-
duced those measures indulged in most violent language i
against that branch of the Legislature which had thrown
them out, and threatened to bring in some measure to re-
form its constitution, to make it more popular, and to I
prevent any attempt ia the future to set at naught any
deliberate intention of this House. We had next year an
entirely opposite policy.

NOTICE.
[TO THE EDITOR OF THE WANANGA.]
Print the following few words in the WANANGA :—
THIS is to give notice to all Europeans and Maoris residing
in the Wairarapa District, that if any person, European
or Maori, is found digging a trench at the Mouth of the Wai-
rarapa River, at the time when the Mouth of that River has
been closed up, any person so acting will be summoned to the
Resident Magistrate's Court, for £100 damages. Any person,
European or Maori, who may see such act done by anyone to
the dam at the Wairararapa, on giving information which.
will lead to the conviction of the offender. will be paid the
sum of £10.
Friends, the Europeans who say your Iand is flooded by the
3am being put up at the Mouth, of the Wairarapa River, be it
known, to you. that those lauds which are covered by the
water, driven back by the erection of the dam, have not been
sold by the Maori to you. or to the Government. You are
mistaken when you claim those lands : they still belong to
the New Zealander. Let me teach you : From the cud of Te
Awapuni, and inland, that land was truly sold by the Maori
to the Government, but from the water line, and out into the
lake, all such belong to the Maori, the land and the water.
And you have done wrong in buying: it from, the Government,
that is. if you have bought these lands from the Government.
