Natives, but even in these cases the Natives have
themselves to blame. Let them now go back and
walk in the old paths. Let them give up strong
drink. Let them be careful of their great estates,
and if they cannot manage those great estates them-
selves, get skilful and honest Europeans to manage I
them for payment. Let them put all Maori children
to school that they may learn. Especially let every
Maori child learn to speak and write English. For
without that he cannot become wise in the books
which contain the knowledge of the world. Nor can
he without being able to speak English defend him-
self against those schemers and selfish men who are
looking out for foolish people to cheat. And above
all let the Maoris go—as the people of Israel went in
olden times—humbly to the footstool of God and
there ask for mercy and wisdom.

Turkish, official accounts state that the Russion army
corps unsuccessfully attacked the entrenchments near
Batoum, but were repulsed with a loss of 40,000 (?)

It will be remembered that on the reconstruction of
the Ministry there was a report that in a short time
Mr. Rolleston would join the Government. That re-
port is now revived. We do not know how much
weight may be attached to it, out the rumor does not
seem to bo without foundation.

From the Coast we learn that the natives engaged
ia the formation of the bridle track between Tologa
Bay and Kohekohe have completed their task in the
most workmanlike manner. They have commenced

THE NATIVE MEETING AT OMAHU.
[CONTINUED FROM 12TH MARCH, 1877.]
Hori te Huki said : I support the motion before the
meeting, and if it is agreed to by this meeting let us send
it on to the Government.
Tikawenga said : This is a good word (the point being
discussed by the meeting), as it is asking for good to be
given to us. Schools were instituted here in former times,
also ministers of God came, and perhaps schools were
opened in those days so that we might also have ministers
of the Gospel. And now in these days let us act so that
we may learn the language of the European (sung a song).
When a new Government comes into power we may send
this request to them (the request contained in the matter
being discussed by the meeting). The Government of
these days are iu continued contention with us.
Haare Paraone said : Let us support schools and public
worship (sung a song). Let us do this so that we may
get life from them now in these days and for the future.
The great property for us to possess is schools in every
district of these islands.
Henare Matua said : I rise to speak, because of the
word of Tikawenga. I have much to say, but I will not
utter all my words now. I think schools arc evil, as the
Europeans will not allow the Maori to learn the great
things of knowledge. The Europeans are growing in
greatness (in knowledge), and if we (the Maori) were (to
do) as they are doing, our children would obtain the great
knowledge also. The word of Tikawenga is the right
word. That is, that we leave the matter now under dis-
cussion till another Government is in power, then we can
take action on this matter. But let the tribes collect
money for themselves. Tikawenga was right when Le
said, let this matter (the question now before the meeting)
stand over.
Noa Huke said : Yes. Let this stand over, as we do
not, or have not seen the Government to which we can
forward this matter. If we send it to the present Govern-
ment, they may not agree to it.
The Chairman put the question to the meeting, and the
meeting agreed to forward it to the Parliament.
The meeting adjourned for an hour and a half.
The meeting was again opened at 3 p.m.
Henare Tomoana in the chair.
The twenty-first subject was read and put to the meet-
ing for discussion.
Noa Huke said : I agree to the words of this subject,
and the point we are to look at in the matter now before
this meeting is the Supreme Court.
Henare Matua said : The Parliament of last year had
this matter before them. It was brought before the Par-
liament by those Europeans who had bought (Native)
land. And even iu these days the European say, do not
let the Supreme Court try the cases in which land is
involved, which were wrongfully bought by them. I
condemn this action of the Europeans of this district.
But if they send petitions to Parliament, we must do the
same.
Hanita said : I am also one who condemns this action
of the European. Let us also send a petition (to Parlia-
ment).
Takarangi said : I ara also one who thinks the same. I
agree to the object of the words of the subject now under
discussion. I have suffered harm. Let this matter be
sent to the House.
Te Katene said : Let us be strong to do this.
Tikawenga said : I agree with the last speakers, do not
let us agree with the European petitions, but let this
meeting send a petition. If they send a prayer to the
Parliament, let us also send a prayer to Parliament.
! Henare Matua said : The Europeans of Ahuriri
(Hawke's Bay) have long since asked the Government to
confirm the mortgages they hold from the Maori. Also
that the Government consent to the purchase of the lands
which they bought previous to the year 1873. That is in
regard to the lands which had passed through the Native
Lands Court previous to that year, which were bought
and mortgaged by them the Europeuns. The Europeans
ask the Government to make a new law to this effect.
That all these purchases or mortgages are correct, and not
one is wrong. And now in these days they are doing even
the same, but Mr. Whitaker and the Parliament are fully
acquainted with that which causes the erritation in the
sale or purchase of these lands.
Pirimona said : It does appear as if this matter were
fully passed. So it appears from the words used by the
speakers who have spoken on this point.
The Chairman explained this matter. He said the peti-
tions of old (the petitions sent in days past) were from one
man, that was from Mr. Williams, but the Europeans per-
! haps of these days are sending a petition from all.
| Karaitiana Takamoana said : Sir D. McLean made a law
for himself, that the Government alone could buy land.
But the Opposition caused this to be opposed, and it came
| to an end so far as Turanga is concerned. This I read
iu the House. The petition from Mr. Sutton in respect to
the Omarumu case was opposed by the Opposition, also
the petition which 1 now hold in my hand, was opposed
by us, and these were put out. But the Europeans of
these days are still acting in the same way. and they
wish a]l the wrong purchases to be confirmed, as if they
had been correctly brought. This is being done at Te
Wairoa and on to Turanga. All that Mr. Sutton is going
to Parliament for is to take his wrongs there so that it may
be said they are correct as they now stand. The reason
the European now act is, because of the Kakiraoa, and
the Awa-a-te-atua blocks. The Europeans know that they
are wrong. And demands have been made by the lawyers,
that the Europeans must pay up back rents now due.
Hence the Europeans have been startled, and they are
now looking for some plan by which they may be saved.
Do not let us agree to these things. But let as shew to
the Parliament the wrong of making any laws, but let the
Supreme Court act in the matter.
Henare Matua said : I think this point is settled, and
may be put to the meeting.
The Chairman put the question to the meeting, and it
was carried without one dissentant voice.
The meeting then adjourned till 10 a.m. next day.

TE WANANGA.
Tuesday. March 13, 1877.
The meeting was opened at 10 a.m. Henare Tomoana
in the chair.
The Chairman read the twenty-second subject.
Manahi said : I do not rise to shew my knowledge, but
to say I agree with the request made in the subject which
we are now discussing. As my thoughts tell me, we are
not living in knowledge in these days. And the purport
of the subject now under discussion is to this effect. It
asks the chiefs and the learned men to act and to think.
It will be well if this is made clear, as given in ihe sub-
ject now being discussed.
Takarangi said : I agree with the subject now being
discussed. I will hold to the name of God for ever. But
I am standing at a distance. This is a very good thing,
that we be active and powerful to put evil down, and
extinguish it. There is not any other matter so good as
peace and quiet, and that we obtain them.
Tikawenga : The point now being- discussed is good, as
it calls on all the great men of these islands, as they are
the men to work. I belong to all the various meeting of
these islands. These are the various meetings. The
King movement is one. prophets are another. Now. while
I speak of these matters do not be offended with me.
There is only one faith in these islands and that is the
root of the King (or Kings are ordained by God). When
Potatau was alive he said, hold to the faith (Christianity)
and to the good. (Here the speaker told a fable). You
have the road now (the power to lead is with you), but do
not lead us back to the road of old, to evil and death, but
rather let us go on in the worship.
Paora Kawhata said : The matter before the meeting
speaks of good for us. This subject is for us, and for
European men. It is not for you, U Manahi, as you are
with the Ministers of God.' This subject speaks to all the
people of these islands. It says that they are all to return
and worship the true God. If I were to speak of the good
that the worship of God did for us iu former days you
would see how great was that good. The men of those
days (when we all worshiped the true God) were like
fathers to each other, or acted like brothers to each other,
though they were not related in body. yet they were in
kind acts, as though they were relatives.
The Whanganui tribes are petitioning the House
on this subject. The Minister of this place committed
adultery, and it was talked of at all places.
Paora Kaiwhata said : It is not night (we shall not
gam any power) by speaking evil of our Minister.
Waikato people came here, and they introduced evil
speaking, but if we are to be led by evil speaking let it be
the power to make us worship the true God.
Karauria said : The subject before the meeting is good.
I am one who has been hit by the blow given by the sub-
ject now under discussion. I was a member of the Church
in days past. I now am a Hauhau. I agree with the
subject now being discussed, which calls on us to go into
[ the Church again. The object of the subject being dis-
cussed is not in regard to the Hauhau only, but it is
spoken to all people.
| Katene said : I rise to say the subject being discussed
is good. I will not go from the point, but speak direct to
the subject. It (the object of the point under discussion)
calls on the chiefs and the men who caused evil to come
on us, and to the men of little note amongst us. The sub-
ject is good.
Wiremu Te Ota said : The subject under discussion is
good. I agree with what Manahi said. This subject ia
exceedingly good and clear.
| Henare Matua said : I agree with the subject under
discussion. It asks us to go back to the worship of the
true God. I say what this subject says. It speaks to all
ia these islands, and to us. This is my great word. Let
us have one law, and let it be the one law of these Euro-
peans who worship the true God. There are many sec-
! tions of the Church, but only one law. Hence they (the
i Europeans) are saved (protected). If we were to follow
their example it would be good for us. I will not say any
more than that I fully approve of the matter contained in
the subject now being discussed.
Manahi said : I have but one remark to make, and that
is in respect to what Paora Kaiwhata said. That the
object of the subject which we are now discussing does
i not apply to me. (Renata Kawepo requested Manahi to
. sit down).
Renata Kawepo said : I do not rise to speak on the sub-
ject now under discussion. If the King and Taranaki
accede to this proposal (that contained in the 22nd pro-
posal) then I will consent to it. I will then praise it.
Horima Katene said : I approve of the subject now
under discussion, and I propose to send it to TE WANANGA
that all the tribes of these islands may see it. and if they
will go their own way that is for them to decide. But do
not let them bear malice. I fully agree with the word.
i That there are many sections of the European Church,
i but the root of all is God.
Haare Paraone said : Let this (the subject now under
i discussion) be for all this coast, and for Turanga, even up
to Whanganui. Let this good be for all.
Wiremu Wanoa said : I agree with this subject now
under discussion. We are like the children of Israel, who
i were in confusion. but it was God who saved them. We
were living in life in the former years (when we worshipped
! the true God), but when strange Gods were introduced
amongst us, then death came to us. True, o true is the
words of this subject now under discussion. But let the
law (English laws) be given with the law of God. You,
o poor man, can not be ignorant of the purport of the sub-
ject under discussion.

CORRESPONDENCE.
To THE EDITOR OF THE WANANGA.
Friend, let this be published in the WANANGA, so that the
Maori tribes and the Europeans of Wairarapa may see it.
On the 16th of April. 1877, the Wairarapa-Committee called
a meeting to be held at Papawai to investigate the dispute
about Papawai.
Those who called that meeting were Repeka Ihaka. Hura
hanga, Matiaha Mokai, Pahoro, Hemi Matiaha, and others.
And those of the Committe who assembled were—Tikawe
nga te tau. Piripi te Maari, Harawira Hape, Tahana Ngaua,
Wenerei Rangitataia. Himiona, Anaru Tuhokairangi, Paratene
Matenga, Raniera te Iho. Ihaia Whakamaiuru, Tamahau,
Whatakorari, and others, in all about 50 men.
On the 19th. of April the case was opened, and continued
till the 25th of same month. Those who spoke on the side of
the Ngatikauhi were Repeka Ihaka. Hoani te Toru, Matiaha
Mokai, and Waaka Tauahi.
Those who spoke on the side of the Ngatikauhi were,
Repeka Ihaka. Hoani te Toru, Matiaha Mokai, and Waaka
Tauahi.
Those who spoke on the side of the Ngatipa-te-ika were,
Paiura. Whatarauihi. Matiu te Ore, Manihera Rangitakai-
waho. and Whatahoro.
And the following is the decision of that Committee who
tried this case. That the boundary to the Ngati-Kauhi. and
all the descendants (of that tribe) shall commence at Manga-
rara Creek, and then oa in a direct line in the middle of the
fence Cor field) of Riwai Tamati, and Manihera Rangitakai-
waho, and it turns on the road of Papawai, then it goes in the
direction of Greytown till it arrives at the bounday of Ngati-
Heretaunga-o-Tohorahina

This is a notice to those who are drunk in the Waspoapoa
district, that over which the Committee have control, which
is near Maungarake, iu the province of Wairarapa. If any
one gets drunk in the presence (or ia the district) of the
people they will be fined five shillings. Also, any one travel-
ling, who may be drunk, they will be fined five shillings. If
any one conveys a bottle of spirits into the presence of the
people, such person will be fined ten shillings. If any one
should refuse to obey this law, he will be taken, before the
Resident Magistrate, Mr. Wardell. ]

Te Teko Rangitaiki.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE WANANGA.
The following few words may be amusing to the peo-
ple of these islands. On the first of the days of the month
of January last, ira the year 1877, a meeting of the Ngati-
porou took place at Whiritoa, in the Tauranga district.
The cause of the meeting taking place was to feel sorrow
before God. There were all the tribes called to come to
that meeting, and that the tribes were to meet on the first
day of January without fail. Then the tribes began to
collect, viz., Te Arawa, Ngatiawa, Ngaiterangi, and other
tribes. There might be at that meeting 150 in all. This
meeting felt the want of food. They had flour only, may
be it was only half a ton, and it was made into porridge.
But they had not any dishes. The dishes they had to use
were the shell of the mussel from the sea, and the plates
were of the same. The cups were the mats oa which
children had slept and messed. Seme of the child-
ren, the boys of Te Arawa tribe, said there are no dishes
in which to hold the bergoo for us, that is for him and his
young friends. He lifted up his head and took his hat
off, and bailed the hat full up of bergoo. And he and all
his young friends eat out of the hat. The Ngatiporou
tribe said the hat had cursed God, and that the hat should
not be taken to the house of God. That boy said in answer
to them, this evil originated with you (you caused me to
act as I have done) in your not having given a dish to
us. You gave (instead of dishes) mussel shells in which
to hold the flour for me and my young friends. Now this
meeting of hunger ended on the 20th day of January,
1877, and all the tribes went to their places. From
