                       SEPTEMBER 21st 1874.
     The Committee of the Wananga did arrange that
these appointments should last only three months from
the beginning of.October to the 25th of December so
that it will give  this Committee   time to  the 25th
of December  to reflect upon .which, canoe (tribe) the
votes will be affirmed on by this Committee. We will
not approve  of the majority of votes, if it is not approved
of it will not be confirmed.
     It will be. sent to each canoe (tribe) to mention
their price for this paper, and each canoe, (tribe) will
vote for their price and return the same to the Chair-
man of this Committee to be approved of, and we will
vote also on which canoe (tribe) it will be confirmed.

    That is the reason we stated it to be only for three
months, so it will give each canoe time to send their
thoughts to us in  November,  dont wait till January
that will be behind  the day  we appoint, viz,, 25th
December   which will give us time to look about. We
shall issue on the 25th December, and you will receive
the same on the 1st-January l875

     And,  if any person wishes to ask for a copy of this
paper to write his proper name, and residence, so that
we shall understand where  to send them,  and also
(Tainui) to send his proper name instead of (Tainui.)

     Friend, the reason that each canoe (tribe) has to
state its price, is because the Press is for the whole
Island, and therefore we cannot best show these .reasons
to our canoes (tribe.)
     When   you vote, call together the tribe or persons
to see their votes, Magistrates, Policeman, or Chiefs
and  also write their names so that we may approve of
them.

     If any tribe, or hapu, do not know the meaning
 of voting, and if any anxious for the Wananga, We
have elected a Committee tor the Wananga, and  also a
 Chairman who will have authority from the Committee,
 Although they may be four or five Members, and also
 write their names at the end of these, words.
      Friends, If a canoe (tribe) or canoes (tribes,) are
 anxious of voting that there should not be any price for
 the paper, we will not accept it. There is the Post
 Office it must have a stamp or else the Mail wont take
 it, and also the persons who are working at the Press,
 they must  be paid so that will be difficulty, if you
 rote that there should not be any pay for the paper.
     The  first voting will be for the Committee.
     The  second, will be for the Chairman.
     Thirdly, and also a person under the Chairman,
 and also others persons under them if you are anxious
 for this work;
      Fourly, the price for the paper, by the year or
 by the month.
      All the words to be looked into.  And  also state
 your returns and the  electing of the Committee, and
 also send the principal word of different canoes (tribes)
 and fix a proper method for us to see and think of

     Friends, when  you  send letters to the Wananga
 please direct it thus, Henry  Tomoana,  Pakowhai
 Napier.

      We  have received a letter from Hori te Huki of
 Wainuioru  Wairarapa, stating to forward him a paper,
 and also the Subscription for the paper per year.
     Friend,  Hori Huki  your Newspaper  has been
 forwarded  some time ago.  The Subscription for the
 paper per year is 10s.
               Terms  of Subscription.
      Friends, Persons who are asking for Newspapers
 to be forwarded to them. Subscription to the Wana-
 nga is 10s. payable in advance per year.—

      DIED ON THE 26TH OF SEPTEMBER 1874.    

    VINE.  A  dangther of Urupehi Puhara age 34
years, died  at Waimarama,    her last instructions to
her mother were not to bury her body at Waimarama,
but take it to the Pakipaki, these words she repeated
four times, on the point of her death, she called to
release her, let her go.' After  incantation was over
all the people began to cry, she laid unmoveable for
a while, but the  people were   still crying her spirit
returned.  20 minutes  after she called to her mother,
to cease: crying (I will never forget you,) then Hae
crying  ceased, and  she . died. She  was  a very
obedient child.  She is a first born to us from our
ancestors down to her. She  was at the Rev. Father
Reigner's Catholic school, and. took very bad, and she
was  took from Napier very  bad by Karaitiana Taka-
moana,  sent  to school in Wellington for a year, and
she returned and  went to school iu Napier for four
years.  And  then came to the school at Pakowhai,
for one  year. Afterward  her  parents took her  to
 Rev. Father Reigner's school, untill close to her death.
 Persons that have seen her say, that she strongly
 revealed her words to God. Although, in the agony
 of pains she called on to God, to rase her.

        To Henry  Tomoana,  give these words to the
 Press* if you like.

                         DECEMBER  13th 1873.
      This talk  is for the letting of a portion of the big;
 hush, (Pakiaka,) to Tareha  to clear off his debt at
 (Kotorewerohia,) I made two portions, one for sale, and
 the other to clear of the debt, one portion I said to Mr.
 Cashmore to be £200 for the trees which Mr. Cashmore
 agreed to, afterwards I went to Mr. Cashmore for the
 money  which Mr.  Cashmore  did not give.  This is the
 beginning of money,  and Peacocks  bond  viz, from
 (Kotorewerohia) and  goes to the (Akatarewa) from
 the ( Akatarewa,) it bounds off to Tareha, for the
 debt which finishes the part to Maney and Peacock.
 I  lined  off a  part  for  ourselves  for the  Maori
 people. Afterwards  Maney   Peacock  and  Cashmore
 went  to Wellington after Tareha, when Mr. Cashmore
 returned  from  Wellington, he  gave  me  a letter the
 contents, that the  Maories  will not enter the  bush 
 (Pakiaka,)  and  including me  also.  That  Tareha i
 and  his Europeans,  (Pakeha)   had let him  have I
 the  whole  of  the bush,  then  I and  my  friends
 went  to  open the  line larger, This is the second.
 Afterwards  when  Maney   and Peacock's trees were
 consumed,  then  Mr.  Cashmore   came  to me several
 times for the portion, I lined of for the Maori people,
 this is the  beginning  of the  difficulties with Mr.
 Cashmore,  the Europeans  who  were  splitting shingles 
 for Mr. Cashmore  were sent off, Mr. Cashmore  went
 to work again.  Afterwards, 1 went to stop it, and told
 Mr.  Cashmore,   also to cut no  more  of my  trees, Mr.
 Cashmore  asked, if I would like to sell. I said I would
 and payment  that I liked would be an engine which
 Mr.  Cashmore   agreed to, and Mr. Cashmore  also said
to allow the men to work while he was away, and on
     NO TE 26TH O NGA RA O HEPETEMA 1874.

work, there was a great deal of difficulty at the time.
I also stated to the Europeans that it was mine, from
one place to another it was mine, and this is also mine
which you are working at, and the Europeans told me
that it was all Maney's, and not the Natives, but the
Europeans  still worked., Then 1 went and broke the
European's tramway up, when Maney  heard of this he
came and brought £20  that money was to stoften me
down  and to allow Mr. Cashmores' men to work, there
was great difficulty and I did not take the money. I
went to Napier afterwards Martin  Hamlin  came also
with £30  to soften me, and  to  allow Mr.  Cashmore's
men  to work at the trees, I did not like the said money.
When   Mr. Cashmore returned from England he found
his mill standing idle He  cut the trees down, so now
 I  was  much  agrived at Mr.  Cashmore's  doings. I
went  and got an Injunction to stop the bush, and then
 Mr. Cashmore  said to me that I had nothing at all to
 do with it, that the bush was Sutton's, which I said no,,
it was mine,  and  Sutton bad  nothing to do with it

 persisting to cut the trees, then I put it in Mr. Carlyon's
 hands and have these difficulties settled. The Lawyer
 had all to do with it from then to the breaking of the
 tramways, and to when  Mr.  Cashmore  knocked  off
 work, and also to the. time the Supreme Court can see.
 to fix. payment.
                        DECEMBER  13th 1873.

     This talk is when Sutton and Worgan came to my
 house, They came for my Crown Grant of Mangatere-
 tere, and they also spoke of another  thing for me to
 take, Mr.  Sutton  has a backer and  summons,  Mr.
 Tanner  akout  (Heretaunga)  which  I asked  if Mr.
 Sutton  was a Magistrate to which Mr. Worgan   replied,
 I would  not be strong, that he was  very • intelligent,
 Thirdly, that I and (Ahere) should give our Crown
 Grants to Mr. Sutton, as a guard, I told him that we
 had  a guard  for our Crown   Grants that was  Mr.
 Williams  and Worgan   said no give it to Mr. Sutton,
 and  lease it for .0 years at £500, per year. And divide
 it 5 for you, and 5 for (Ahere,,) To this I replied that
 there could not be two leases, Mr. Williams and yours,
  Sutton and Worgan  replied what is the good of Mr.
  Williams, that  Mr.  Williams  was  a bad person, a
  robber. It is two  years and  a half and. you have
  received no money  for your land from Mr. Williams,
  but you assent and I will write a note to Mr. Williams
  to give me the money  and  I will give it to you, I said
  to them that I did not alike what they said, and that
  Mr. Williams  also would not assent, Mr. Sutton then
  said if Mr. Williams  would  not assent, that his place
  will be seized and a policeman will catch him. After-
  wards I went to Napier, Mr. Sutton. caught me, and:

house was, Mr.  Sutton said here, to the house of the
Law, I asked him what was  the talking about, he said
anything, so I went to the house, they wrote a paper,
we did not know what it was for, when the paper was
finished he. gave me a pen,  and I said to him that I
did not know  the contents of the paper, and also the
giving of the pen to me, but read the contents of the
paper  so that I could hear what was  in the paper,
These was the statement in the paper," five hundred for
you  and five hundred for (Ahere,) I ask him, you
arranged  that money,  Worgan   said that him  and
Sutton made  it, and it was a right arrangement of
theirs, I said who arranged it, it was not me, this work
of yours is a fraud, I went out to the town, Worgan
followed me  and pulled me into Simon's public house
and made me  drink spirits, which they gave me three
glasses of rum, BO I was totally intoxicated, I did not
know  that I signed a paper, they perhaps wrote it, and
took it to the Commissioner, some days afterwards I
heard of it by another European who stated that I was
in a large paper, then I and (Raihania) went to Napier
when  we got to the Court house, 1 asked the European
to give me the paper that my name was into which the
European  replied it, if I payed, he would give it, I gave
the shilling, and ke gave me the paper when mv hand
reached the sheet that my name was in, I asked him if
he would allow me to rub my name out of the paper,
that my name  was fraudly put in the paper, I also said
will you give me  the paper and tear it, which he did
 not grant, Mr. Wilson came and said no I said to him
 do you like to rob me  and  Sutton will say that I
 have his money,   I like to  tear, I  will tear that
paper,  Mr. Wilson said, then you will go to (Kereopa)
 house. I said to Mr. Wilson, let that house be for your-
 selves for Messrs. Wilson, Sutton, and Worgan,  I am
not  a robber and go to that house, you and Sutton
 are the robbers, and that house is for you two, and
 to morrow  I  will tie your  neck  at the house  o:
 (Kereopa.)

  Maori friends to look at, although the Wananga. It
  is a small word, the word which is put on board of
  you. which I hope yon  will not reject as this work
  is in the beginning and will reach the large words.
  Friend the Wananga, you have sought some method
  for us at present also for the whole Island, for the
  disease of man, and also the land, seeking that way

                 WHANGARA.
                          SEPTEMBER 30th 1874.
    To  Henry Tomoana,  and also all the Chiefs and
tribes, Friend, Greeting to yon, under the shadow of
our Saviour who  saved us  from being beguiled, I
thought by his goodness he would save us by our
custom, but he can save us by our continuing praying
to him.  This is my Greeting to the great knowledge
which you  have received at this time of dark, and
pain that press us, namely the abundance of Laws of
 (Pakeha)  friends. But   our  darkness and  pain
is born to the world, the  Wananga   whom   you
have  sent fruit so that these tribes can see, but it is
right a  proverb ako  says, that your ancestor the
 (Whakatatare) be at this point, and (Ngarangi-wha-
kaupoko)  at that point. The stakes of his net, but
it is pulled only at that end, and the fish is caught
and put on shore, which is called a (Atihakono) his
 child is the Wananga, The  fish at this end, and the
 middle that we are now catching are sharks, sting-rays,
 (Kopuatotara, Punga's,) bad fishes, their children are
 Liquor, adultery, theft, when the  sun sets, these
 fishes are caught. Bat these fishes are caught also
 in the day time, the likeness of them that catch, these
 fish is like the (Koura maraa) to look at. Friends,
 enough, of these weak words.  I feel ashamed oi
 your great work, and  also that wealth for us, the
 burthen, for our canoe which, you tell us to send a
 load, let it be left until we seek for some presently.

 My  dear Friends, who are staying at the South end
 of our Island. Salutation to you,  there is perhaps
 some old people of that end that remembers the
 great -works of our Father the Rev. Williams had
 done in former days, when  be was travelling from
 oue place to another, amongst Armys, (Ope taua) to
 press down the  evils and revealing, also the direct
 course how to be saved. However, this is a though
 from our  hearts and to his great works in controling
  God's rules, and good roles which saved us, and by
 which  we  quietly cast a side our former rules, but
 it is not only that point we think of, but we look a
 the  50  years which   has passed over. When this
  Island was covered with, great clouds of evils, but he
 never  preserved MB  body, and worked  with the
 raruraru o tenei Motu, Mehemea pea ka rite te whaka-
 haere a te Motu katoa nei, tena ano e puta he oranga
mo  tatou, Otira kei te mahi te tikanga.
