SATURDAY, MARCH  31, 1877.

WONDERFUL   is the indulgence extended to those who
are powerful.  In  all ages men have been trained to
worship wealth and  power.   Even  in free England
and  in these free colonies of Britain too much homage
is  paid  by  all classes of men   to these twin idols.
 Sometimes, indeed, a person born in the  purple is
punished, but as the exception  proves the rule, so
these  isolated instances merely  show   the  partiality
which  men  display towards the great in wealth and
influence.
   We  are led into this train of reflection by the fact
 that so many of the newspapers in the colony are fol-
 lowing in the wake of the Hawke's Bay Herald and New
 Zealand Times in the use of unjust language and ex-
 pressions concerning the settlement of Messieurs Watt
 with the Natives as to the Awa-o-te-Atua and Kaki-
 raawa lands. In the sacred name of justice we appeal
 to the Press and to the public opinion of New Zea-
 land against the wrong which is thus being inflicted
 upon one section of the people of this country for the
 benefit of another. The Wanganui Chronicle, a paper
 which cannot be  concerned in these matters  farther
 than hoping  to see justice and equity done, thus
 sneaks :—" Including reserves and other concessions
 made  by the Messrs. Watt, the total value paid to the
 natives may   be  put  down   at from  £28,000  to
 £30,000.  To  say the least of it a very dangerous
 precedent  has  been established, and  it is really a
 matter of impossibility even approximately to predict
 the end." The same paper then goes on  to call the
 proceedings and their result as a " raid " upon the
 Messrs.  Watt, and asks if " other gentlemen will not
 be called upon to submit  to similar levies with the
 alternative of yielding up possession, and sacrificing
 any outlay for improvements they may  have  effected
 or claims to compensation.'' We appeal again to the
 good sense of all our  contemporaries  against  this
i method of argument, and against the principles which
! the argument itself supports. There is no doubt  a
 great amount of ignorance about these matters even in
 the minds of well informed men outside Hawke's Bay.
 Prima  facie if the Messrs. Watt had to pay £30,000
 to obtain a good title to their lands they must before
 this payment have had a bad  title. Is it wrong of
 the natives to protect themselves or to ask a proper
 price for their lands ? Because their skins are dark

are they to be denied the right to defend themselves 
in courts of law and equity against those who have
been so long striving to fleece them of their estates ?
Because they are ignorant of our language and of the
meaning and effect of our deeds and laws are they to
be  reprobated  if, being cheated they resort to" the
tribunals of justice for defence and "fur reparation ?
Will any  paper, nay, will any individual in this com-
murity  point out a single part of the Messrs. Watt's
settlement  which  is not consistent with  law, with 
equity, with  the most  abstract  justice, with good
faith and the simplest honor ? The term Repudiation 
which has  been, affixed to the Native advisers and
actions, is itself opprobious, but it is utterly unwar- 
ranted by  anything done by or with the authority of
the Natives themselves.  No just claim has ever been 
repudiated.  In  the case  under  notice, so strongly
were the Messrs. Watt  convinced of the strict justice
of the Natives' claims that they voluntarily increased
the area of the reserves given  back to the  Maoris.
No  stronger evidence than this is possible. On many
occasions has a good  cause been branded  with vile
names.   Such  slanders  are the  proper weapons
of  the vile.   The  papers are now  saving  that a
Commission ought to be appointed having absolute
power  to deal with these cases.  Will  they be sur-
prised to hear that three or four years ago the Natives
were all willing that such, an commission should be
established, and  were  anxious  to submit themselves to
such a tribunal, but that  the Europeans concerned
headed  by  the late Sir Donald  McLean and  Mr.
Ormond   opposed  and  defeated the project. These
two  gentlemen  as the mouth-pieces of the whole party,
said, " We   will have no commission.  If the natives
are aggrieved let them go to a Court of law or equity
—that   is the proper place for them. They are afraid
to go there." Now, when  the Natives have recourse to
the legal tribunals of the country, they become terri-
 fied for they find that their fancied security is but a
refuge of lies. If a native's name has been obtained
by fraud and misrepresentation to a deed  conveying
 away  all his lands, is he to be branded as a cheat
 when  he cries out for redress ? If his cross has been
 obtained when he has been made so stupidly drunk as
 not  to know   what   he was doing, is he to be hunted
 down  when he declaims against  such practices ? If
 his name has been  forged to deeds of
 groat value and  importance  is he to be made an
 object of scorn and contumely because he prays for
 redress and protection.  If a child of ten years has
 been made to hold the end of a pen while some
 scoundrel whose  skin  is white guided the flowing ink
 of robbery, is she to be reprobated universally because
 she compains that her ancestral lands are

 seemed to seize upon a certain set of 
 they trampled down every generous sentiment every
 manly thought, every christian doctrine in their deter-
 mination to be rich.  The  natives, owners  of hundred
 of thousands of fertile acres, ignorant, simple. arces-
 sible to temptation, only stood between, them and the
 consummation   of their hopes.  They  yielded to the
 temptation, and  from thence  arose the present position
 of affairs. And  we ask only this, that the same jus-

              GOOD   TEMPLARY.
  A  LODGE of Good  Templars was opened at the Native
  Schoolhouse  across the river on Saturday evening by
   Mr. Brown,   a halt-caste, who has  arrived here lately
  from  Havelock, where he has been  working  a  long
  time  past in the cause of Templary.   He   was  ably
  assisted by the Grand  Lodge Deputy, Brother W.  T.
   Best, and Kerehoma   Piwaka,   the Native Minister at
   Waiapu.   About  45  members of both  sexes wero
   initiated, some 10 or 12  members   of the  Pioneer
   Lodge, Gisborne, being present. The  new lodge is to
   be called the " Ark of Friendship," and its formation
   is mainly due to the exertions of Kerehoma Piwaka.
   who has been anxiously waiting  the arrival of  Mr.
   Brown   to get the lodge started. After the initiation .
were completed  the  officers were installed in their
several stations, the usual odes being sung.
  Kerehoma  Piwaka  then delivered a very able address
to the Natives, which was interpreted to the members
of the Pioneer Lodge by Mr.  Brown to  this effect—
"That  he hoped the Natives; would one and all keep
their obligations intact, and that the  sister lodges
would work in unison."
   Grand  Lodge Deputy  Bro. Best  then returned
thank? for his lodge and hoped that the lodges would
always  live together in Christian charity, and  visit
each other's lodges as often as convenient.  About
 16 members of the new lodge visited the Pioneer lodge
last night. Mr.  Brown proceeds to Tologa Bay to day
to form a lodge there. About  200  are awaiting his
 arrival.

                 WHITE ISLAND.
                   (From the Otago Witness).
   SULPHUR,  or White Island, contains about 600 acres,
   abounding in sulphur in every stage of purity and
 development.  It is the property of Mr. J. A. Wil-
   son and  Mr.  F. H. Troup.   These gentlemen are now
   engaged in perfecting arrangements for the export of
   the  sulphur   to  Australia, to India, to China, as well
   as for the supply of the home market.  The demand
 in New  Zealand  alone is 150 tons per annum, worth
  about  Ł22 per ton, or Ł3300 in all. The Australian
  Colonies consume over  Ł20,00 worth per annum.

                                             March  24.
THE  Native Minister,  accompanied   by  Majors Mair  and
Roberts, and Mr. McKay,   held  meetings yesterday  with
Manga  and the assembled natives. Manga opened the pro-
ceedings by formally laying down that the boundary over
 which the King's mana must be recognised. This boundary
 runs from Horohoro  to Atiamuri and Whangamata, Late
 Taupo, and if recognised would shut up the Tokoroa coun-
 try between Atiamuri and Cambridge, and defer to an un-
 known  date the opening up of the main line of road to
 the latter place. After Rewi's speech the Ngatiraukawa
 chiefs addressed the  Native  Minister vehemently,  and
 nearly unanimously repudiated the Kings boundary laid
 down  by  Manga,  and  asserting  their determination to
 deal with their ancestral lands of Tokoroa iu whatever
 way  they deemed best, and requested that the question of
 ownership  be settled by the Native Land Court, and the
 roads opened, declaring that such was the full and matured
 policy of the large majority of the Ngatiraukawa   tribe.
 The meeting  was adjourned till next day.
                                              March 25.
   The   following  is a  summary   of Dr. Pollen's reply :—
 " Friend, Rewi Manga,  and  the assembled people.—Salu-
 tations!  I have listened with attention to all that has
 been said.  Where there are  differences of opinion the
 first step towards agreement is a conference. and I hope
 that agreement  will come out of this talk.  By  a  little
 concession on  each side good must come.   The possibility
 of my  being able to help rests very much with yourselves.
 There is no reason why I should take one side or the other
 mv   work  is to serve the interests of both sides. With
 reference to  what  Rewi  has  said, and about the King
 boundary, I hold that only those of the Native race who
 acknowledge it can expect to be bound by it. For the
sake of peace and quietness I myself would be inclined to
 respect it, but experience has proved it to be an unsatis-
 factory arrangement.  I say it were better had it never
 existed, and lest it should be the cause of strife I say now
 that it had better be blotted cut. But I am not going to
 touch it ; I am not bound by it. It is a matter of senti-
 ment, and we here to-day see the weakness of it. Your
 ancestral boundary is not a difficult question. It depends
  upon  Maori  customs and  evidence and  law ; title can

easily be proved in the Native Lands Court. [The Hon.
the Native Minister here fully explained the machinery
of the Native Lands Court, and advised the Natives how
to Act with regard to their lands.]  With reference  to
roads, I repeat what I said at Cambridge, that in the
country covered by Crown grants the Government  will
make  roads wherever they think them necessary, but they
will not make roads throughout the native lands against
the wish of the owners.   We  do not hesitate to construct
roads through the lands of Europeans whenever they are
required, for it is not right that one man should stand in
 in the way of many. But as you do not yet fairly under-
 stand our ways, we treat you differently. The Govern-
 ment  does not ask you  to part with year land against
 year own wishes, for we consider it very necessary that
 you should retain large reserves for your own purposes.
 Allusion has been made to irregular sales made by Wai-
 katos. I am  seeking the way to remedy this evil. When
 I find it I will show it you. I will do all in my power to
 help you in every way, and shall consider no labor too
 great if for your good. The promises made to you by
 Sir Donald McLean  I will fulfil ; his word I will make my
 word." (The  Hon. the Native Minister spoke at consider-
 able length, and with great force, and appeared to give
 the greatest satisfaction).
   Manga  then said, "This is my last word, I am troubled
 because of the private sales that are taking place, and
 have taken place.  I ask  that this question be  left in
 abeyance until next spring, when I may see more clearly
 than I now do the way to a peaceful termination.
    Dr. Pollen has left for Napier, and purposes being at
 Wellington  on Tuesday  next.

THE  NATIVE  MEETING AT OMAHU.
                            OMAHU,  March 8, 1877.
  Paraone said : The first meeting was held at Pakowhai.
This is the second meeting, and I am here. The eleven
 subjects which were discussed at the Pakowhai meeting
should be sent to the Parliament, so that our friends, the
European  members  of Parliament, might take action. I
own  Karaitiana  only  as the member to represent me in
Parliament.
   Heta Tiki said : On the fifth of  March  this meeting
 was called, and you now say let the subjects be sent to
 the Parliament. If clear answers had been  received in
 regard to these subjects we would not have to send them
 back ; but as the answers are not clear, send them back.
   Renata Kawepo  said : I think the subject has been fully
 discussed.  We   have  many  other  points to talk about.
 Let us cease to speak on the subject which has occupied
 the time of the meeting so long.
   The Chairman then put the following question to the
 meeting:—"Shall we send from this meeting a  second
 petition in regard to these subjects to the Parliament."
 The  meeting was  unanimous,  not one desenting voice
 being given.
   The meeting adjourned to 4 p.m.. when the discussion
 would be renewed.

   The meeting was again opened at 4 p.m. on the 9th
 March.
   Henare Tomoana  in the chair.
   The Chairman  read the resolutions, which wero laid be-
 fore the meeting to discuss, when the Subject 3 was taken
 for discussion.
   Karauria  said, I agree with this resolution.
   Mohi  said, I am glad in respect to this word, and shall
 wait to see the end, when I shall act.
   Petera Rangihiroa  said, I am pleased with the informa-
 tion sent to us from the Government—" That  they have
 ceased to bay the lands of the Maoris." This information
 was not asked for, they grave it of their own free will.
   Horima  Katene  said, I am asking about this one word,
 which  is used by this meeting, viz., " This meeting is glad
 that the Government have ceased to buy land." This joy
 may  not be sincere.  Is this meeting glad, or is it some
 one else who is glad ? Let all the people of this meeting
 try and  find what this word " glad " means, as it is not 
 easy  to find out. And when the Government shall have
 joined with this meeting in feeling joy on this same sub-
 ject, it will be clear then.
   Peni Te Ua said, my idea is, that the word " joy " was
 used by this meeting, so that it might be forwarded to
the Parliament.
   "Wi Wanoa  said, I was taken by surprise when I heard
 these words, but if the Government bad said, " They had
 ceased  to buy land," I would have praised them.
   Renata Kawepo  said. I say, these words were (used)
 by the Government, as, I think. I have seen them notified
 in a newspaper. Let the Government dispute the joy of
 this meeting, and if these words are right then that joy
 is very right.
  The Chairman explained the words.
   Karaitiana Takamoana,  M.H.R., said, I will not express
 any joy as the receipt of this news, but when my eyes
 have seen, then I will express my joy, because the Go-
 vernment still continue to buy the Maori land. I have
 heard that words   many  times from   the Government
 officers spoken to me—who told me that the Government
 have ceased to buy land from the Natives. But the Go-
 vernment still continue to buy land from the Ngatiporou.
 but they (the Natives) are to blame for letting the Go-
vernment  have the land.
   Mete Kingi said, let us speak of the wrong acts. The
 Whanganui  people have taught the word, not to sell land.
 And I have also taught, that land must not be sold, or
 leased. But they will not listen. If the people of Wha-
 nganui sell land, I will cut their necks. Sir D. M'Lean
 1ms beard my word—that land must not be bought.
  Te  Oti Takarangi said, I agree with what Renata has
 said. I also have seen the notice that the purchase of
 land by the Government has ceased. I also have taught
 the lesson—cease to sell land, but they  will not listen.
 If they cease to buy land, it will be right. I saw the
 notice, that they had ceased to buy land in the Waka,
 Maori newspaper, but if I bad seen it in our WANANGA
 1 would then have believed it. That is our word - that
 the necks of land sellers will be cut. Still they do not
 listen.
   The  meeting  then  discussed this question—that  the
 subject now under consideration be altered, and that it be
 worded as follows :—"  If it is true, if it is certain, that
 information has been received that the Government have
 ceased to buy Maori land is correct, this meeting is exceed-
 ingly pleased, because there have been great and many
 evils brought on the tribes by the acts of the Government
 land purchases. And it is right and good that the pur-
 chase of the Native lands should cease.
   Agreed to by the meeting.
   The  meeting  then considered subject number  four
 which was read by the Chairman.                      
   Eparaima : I agree with the words of the fourth sub-
 ject.
   Petera te Rangihiroa said, the word " joy " should be
 dealt with as the former word.
   Horima  Katene said, I agree with the subject now be-
 fore the meeting. I agree that there should be as many
 Maori members  in the Parliament as there are European
 members,  because as there can not any good  come  to
 the Maori, while there are so few Maori members in the
 House.
   Moroati said, I will say the same thing as my friend
 who said, if there is to be only one (Maori) member I
 will not vote in future.
   Tikawanga said, we shall be overthrown if we have
 many  (Maori)  members,  as you may  see, in what  has
 taken place ; two out of the four Maori members have
 gone to the Government  side, and only two  members
 remain true to us. Now, if we have many Maori members,
 we shall suffer greatly.                                
   Renata  Kawepo  said, I will not consent to have many
 Maori members,  as we may  elect some poor man who  has
 not any money, who  will rejoice because of the Govern-
 ment penny.  I say that ray thoughts tell me that we
 have elected Maori members  to  the Parliament, so that
 we may  lose our lands, because in the Parliament the
I points are discussed in regard to railways, and roads, by
| which the lands will be taken ; and when  the Maori
 tribes are destitute of land, they will blame the Govern-
 ment, who  in return for our charging them with being
 the cause of our losing our land, will say, your Maori
 members  consented.  I will not agree to this mode of pro-
 ceeding.  Look at Wi Parata, who was  bought by  the
 party with whom  he acted with money.  Let us first ask
 what  the members  are to receive. If it is £500 a year for
  each member, I shall then be pleased, but as it is at pre-
 sent, I  will not  consent. The  mistakes of Ngapuhi,
 Whanganui,  Ngatitoa, and Nga  te Raukawa  are very
  many.  Even  when  the tribes of these districts saw the
  evil of voting as they did, they still voted for half-castes,
  and voted for Wi Parata as member of Parliament.

  Noa  Huke  said, I agree with  what  has been  said in
respect to voting  for Maori   members of Parliament.  I
think  we ought  to have eight new members in the Parlia-
ment.  and two  new  members in the Upper House, so that
there  would  be four members in the Upper House.  I say
this, so that there may be some Maori members to assist
the  European members when they take any action for the
Maori people.   And those Maori members could vote on
which  even  side they thought was right. This they could
 do of their own free will, and not be lead by us. And those
 Maori members could  be the medium of communication
between   the  House  and the Maori tribes. It was the act
 of the Maori members by which we (the tribes) heard of
 and saw  the Government law which we have of late con-
 demned (new Native Lands Act).  If we had not had
